Chicago IL to Anacortes WA

Yet another state line crossing
- quite urban this time
- transitioning from Gary, Indiana
to South Chicago, Illinois

Day 30: Tuesday, August 3.
To Hampton Inn - in vicinity of O'Hare International Airport; Another long day through Gary IN and south of Chicago - urban riding to bikepath along Lake Shore Drive in Chicago - then long trek through city to airport - 6 hotels all sold out until receiving lodging at Hampton Inn at 7:15 PM. 70 miles.

In theory, cars share streets with bikes
- but try biking trough Chicago

for a bit of reality testing

Day 31: Wednesday, August 4.
Non-bike day - Catharine & Bob went into Chicago and up Sears Tower - I went to laundrymat; we got bike boxes from United - and with Rob's genius, got pedals off bikes and into boxes.

Day 32: Thursday, August 5.
Bike boxes, all our gear and ourselves transported to terminal by motel shuttle - flew to Seattle; reassembled bikes in baggage claim area and rode into downtown, using route directions I had downloaded from web. Stayed in downtown motel - went to jazz club for dinner & live music - wonderful change of pace all day. 14 miles.

Day 33: Friday, August 6.
To REI in AM to refit, then biked to ferry (Princess Margueritte) from Seattle to Victoria, Vancouver Island. Dense fog en route for stretches, then open up to the beautiful Pacific Northwest for 5 hour trip. Biked to Thetis Lake campground. 12 miles.

Day 34: Saturday, August 7.
Biked to Sidney, BC to catch noon ferry to Anacortes, WA - clear weather so could follow our route with maps - saw two pods of Orca whales, much to our delight. Took another ferry from Anacortes to Lopez Island and spent wonderful evening with Eric, Elf, Robin & Molly Hall Fay (Tom's son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren).

Day 35: Sunday, August 8.
Ferry back to Anacortes to pick up the Adventure Cycling's route again - this time going from west to east (sent Sunday AM - so can't report on day's activities yet).
