We saw them in several places in Panama and the Arenal region of Costa Rica, and were astounded by their endless toils: tiny streams of leaf pieces moving in long procession to nests below ground. Accompanying ants serve as guards. One can spot their sources when leaves are cut from the edges in.
Other ants clear the nests of debris, piling high at the base of lucky trees which benefit from the nutrients.
