Leaving Malibu after a spectacular sunrise, we entered the Los Angeles area – 50 miles which consisted in large part of bike paths along the beaches. Although we northerners found the 80 degree weather quite summer-ish, evidently the locals did not, as the volleyball nets stood largely unused. A sprint through Long Beach gave a glimpse of the port through which hundreds of thousands of containers pass every month, and offered new evidence that industrial highways are not ideally suited to biking. We bedded down in Long Beach's Holiday Inn.
