We rounded the perimeter of Monterey Bay, where the mouth of the Salinas River and aggressive irrigation produce rich land for strawberries, picked by laborers’ hands, and artichokes, cut by machete and carried in rectangular sacks on workers’ backs. From Marina, where we had lunch, the farms gave way to evergreens and low scrubby plants in sandy soil. Tom biked the 17 mile drive areound Monterey's famous golf courses and cypress trees. We stayed in Carmel with Galen Call, Liz’s first cousin (once removed from Bob and Catharine), and her very welcoming family.
