The Hearst Mansion’s opulence rests high above San Simeon, and Tom took in the swimming pools and legends of gold and parties lasting days. For Liz, Bob, and Catharine, the ruggedness of the Big Sur region gave way to more rolling hills today, and a brisk tailwind pushed us forward. From Morro Bay, we cut inland and through San Luis Obisbo, whose Franciscan mission remains a church in active use. San Luis was dry and hot – 86 degrees, compared to 44 degrees at the start of today’s ride – but as we returned to the coast the fog rolled in (or we rolled into the fog). We camped at Pismo State Park
