|Today’s ride was again more inland. Flat irrigated fields grew lettuce in the Santa Maria Valley. A short, steep, climb carried us out of the valley and to the hills above Lompoc. La Purisma Mission near Lompoc retains something of the remoteness which must have characterized the missions in Spanish times. We spent the afternoon without a camera listening to tales of life in the mission both at its peak in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. It was wonderfully restored by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. We tucked in for the night at River Park RV Campground.|
A young woman died this year when her car missed this unguarded switchback turn. She was 18 years old.
